Teeth whitening

Using your whitening trays

Using your trays, managing sensitivity and keeping the result.

Using your trays

Put a small bead of gel in each tooth space of the tray, seat it, and wipe away any excess from your gums. Wear for the time prescribed, usually once a day for two to three weeks.

Pola strengths and wear times

  • Pola Day 6% or 7.5% hydrogen peroxide: 1 or 2 × 30 minutes a day, or 1 × 45 minutes a day
  • Pola Day 9.5% hydrogen peroxide: 2 × 15 minutes a day, or 1 × 30 minutes a day
  • Pola Night 10% carbamide peroxide: 2 hours to overnight
  • Pola Night 16% or 18% carbamide peroxide: 90 minutes to overnight
  • Pola Night 22% carbamide peroxide: 1 × 45 minutes a day
  • These are SDI’s general recommendations and may change. Follow the instructions you were given, and check the latest information on SDI’s website (sdi.com.au).

If your teeth get sensitive

  • Skip a day or two, then carry on
  • Use a sensitive toothpaste, or put some in the trays for 10 minutes
  • Call the practice if sensitivity is severe or lasts more than a few days

Keeping the result

Fillings and crowns won’t whiten. The colour fades gradually, and occasional top-ups with your trays keep it bright. Store your trays in their case, away from heat.
